4 Artist-Approved Nail Trends to Try in 2017

"I love foil-fading nails. You can wear them in any season," Yasuda says. She suggests stopping by an art supply store to cop your foil.  

1. Apply your base coat (pictured here in clear) and wait for it to dry. 

2. Swipe a small amount of clear polish only on the tip of the nails. 

3. Gently place shredded foil on the area, heavier along the edge to achieve a gradient. 

4. Once dry, seal your look with topcoat. 

Yasuda notes that while the chrome nail made its humble debut last year, its popularity will only grow in 2017. This style isn't for the faint of heart, though: You're going to need some advanced manicure skills. But if you know the difference between non-wipe gels and water-based topcoats, follow Yasuda's directions:

1. Apply base gel and color gel and cure.

2. Apply your non-wipe gel and cure. Yasuda recommends this process, but you can sub in a water-based topcoat instead of a non-wipe gel. 

3. Once the topcoat is cured, dust the chrome powder with a makeup sponge.

4. Apply hard gel topcoat and let set. 

"The French mani is a classic, timeless look, but the tips don't necessary have to be white!" Yasuda says. The design options are endless, but this minimal look (worn by none other than ELLE.com's beauty director, Julie Schott) is our next go-to. 

1. Apply a clear base coat. 

2. Apply a thick nude line below the free edge and let it dry.

3. Fill in the rest of the tip with white polish. 

Abstract graphics never go out of style, and the irregularity is a bonus—even shaky hands can achieve this look. "To keep the design clean and simple, don't use more than four colors," Yasuda says. 

1. Apply base coat and follow it with your base color.

2. Use a skinny nail art brush to freehand your design. Yasuda recommends the easy Scotch tape cheat for clean edges. 

3. Finish the look with a clear topcoat.
