I’m obsessed with teeth. No need to be alarmed, it’s just that I grew up getting fillings left and right, so I’ve become a very dental health-aware adult. I never go a day without brushing my teeth with my electric toothbrush, flossing in the evening, and running my retainer through an ultrasonic cleaning machine. This year, I’ve decided to explore a new (to me) frontier in the world of teeth: teeth whitening.
Admittedly, my teeth aren’t as bright as they could be, probably the result of a few bad habits and one too many coffees over the years. “Teeth become yellow over time due to the absorption of extrinsic stain,” explains Dr. Joyce Kahng, a cosmetic and restorative dentist and the owner of Orange + Magnolia Dental Studio in Costa Mesa, CA. “If these stains are left on the surface of the teeth for too long, they get absorbed into the tooth structure, leading to discoloration. Common culprits include foods high in pigment, like coffee, red wine, and pasta sauce—essentially anything that would stain a white coat almost immediately.”

How often can you use teeth whitening strips?
You should always follow the directions on the box, but as Dr. Wagner says, it’s “usually once a day for seven to 14 days.” He and Dr. Kahng also warn against using them too often, as doing so can lead to sensitivity and irritate the gums. “Crest, for example, suggests not using more than two boxes of their whitening strips per year,” says Dr. Kahng. Always check the product instructions to avoid overuse and potential sensitivity.”
Do those LED teeth whitening lights actually make a difference?
Unfortunately, they may not be as effective on our teeth as they are on our acne. “I don’t personally believe in LED teeth whitening lights,” says Dr. Kahng. “If you’re considering using a whitening strip system, you might notice that some brands offer a bundle with a light. For example, Crest sells a version with just strips and another that includes an LED light. I always tell people to ditch the light and get more strips for the same price. The light itself isn’t doing much—it’s the hydrogen peroxide in the strips that does all the work. I call the LED light a ‘fancy timer’ because it’s more of a gimmick than an actual whitening tool.”
